Cornell Formula SAE Project Team
About the Team
  • Brings together 40-50 undergraduate and graduate students of mechanical, business, electrical, and systems engineering fields to fund, design, build, test, and race an open wheel style race car in accordance with the Society of Automotive Engineers
  • Our team has won 4 of the last 8 competitions, all of which had over 100 schools entered from around the world.
  • Our faculty advisor, a much respected professor, has been with the team since its inception over 20 years ago
Dates of Participation: January 2005-May 2008
  • Led Engine Team of ~20 people to conceptualize, design, prototype, test and optimize all engine and electronic components while meeting targets for budget and schedule
  • Attended 8 meetings per week to keep the team organized, focused, & productive
  • Designed, built, and tested a butterfly throttle, which integrated neck-down and restrictor to reduce the length of the intake line and reduce turbulent flow
  • Made and approved technical drawings for manufacture
  • 4 years of manual machining experience and 1.5 years experience writing code for, and operating, a CNC Mill
  • Tested and tuned ‘06 & ’07 engine packages with Chassis and Engine Dynos
  • Led project to completely rebuild 2004 race car for use in driver training
  • Maintained both old and new race cars, as well as our engine dynamometer
